The SNDT Women’s University was founded by Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve who dedicated his life to the noble cause of uplifting the conditions of Indian women. His dream of establishing a University for women was fulfilled in 1916 with five students. Sir Vithaldas Thackersey, an eminent industrialist of Mumbai, supported the noble cause with a generous donation of Rs. 15 lakhs. The Mumbai campus was incepted in 1936 and the Head Office of the University was shifted to Mumbai.
The University celebrated its centennial year in 2016 (1916-2016). The University succeeded in acquiring statutory recognition from the Govt. of Maharashtra. It has 178 affiliated colleges in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and has around 70,000 students on roll in liberal and professional programmes. These are offered through various faculties such as Arts, Fine Arts, Social Science, Commerce, Science, Education, Home Science, Law, Technology Management, Library & Information Science, Computer Science, Social work, Design, etc.
